Individual Human Development and Advancing the Team Science Workforce

Team Science scholarship has, over the last twenty years, dedicated much of its time to studying teams and how, through evidence-based best practices and interventions, they can promote better teaming in science. Readiness for such engagements has been a traditional focus in the science of team science. Both individual and team readiness have received attention in research. Less explored is individual readiness through the lens of human development and, in equal part, organizational readiness, which has become an increasingly important consideration, especially in recent times of instability. This session will explore some of the work done in these areas and highlight how this agenda of scholarship should continue.

About Gaetano Lotrecchiano: Dr. Gaetano "Guy" Lotrecchiano is a Senior Fellow of INSciTS. He has been part of the team science community for over 20 years and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Research and Leadership and Pediatrics at the George Washington University. His training is in human and organizational learning and is strongly influenced by his humanistic research. Over the last 5-6 years, he has devoted much of his scholarship to the question, "What is team science competence?" and "How can we evaluate it through the lens of Human Development?" At this Salon, he and his colleagues will discuss work they have focused on over the last several years and lead participants in an exploration of "What's next for team science evaluation?"

Epistemological diversity can be a hidden challenge when working in interdisciplinary research teams. While it's expected for team members to have different skills and specialized background knowledge, some assumptions in our home disciplines are so deep-seated that it can be surprising to learn our collaborators don't share them. These can include theoretical frameworks, assumptions about causes and abstract relationships, commitments about priorities, or beliefs about which research activities and outcomes are ethical. Ignoring deep epistemological disputes risks creating political divides within research teams, but identifying and discussing such differences opens opportunities for conceptual change and for reaching new audiences.

About Dr. Evelyn Brister: Dr.  Evelyn Brister is a Professor of Philosophy at Rochester Institute of Technology and a faculty affiliate in the Public and Environmental Science programs. She is the editor, with Robert Frodeman, of A Guide to Field Philosophy (Routledge, 2020), a collection of essays examining transdisciplinary philosophers. she is a frequent collaborator on inter- and transdisciplinary teams, and her recent research has investigated the ethics of synthetic biology, value frameworks in conservation science, sustainable communities in the U.S. Mountain West, and research ethics at the network scale.
