Summer of Team Science - 2022

This summer, as a prelude to our SciTS 2022, INSciTS hosted periodic virtual seminars on new and developing areas of research in the science of team science.

Our goal is to provide the SciTS community with an opportunity to engage with exciting areas of research in preparation for our more in-depth get together during the 2022 conference later in the summer. Ocean Memory as a Transformative Concept for Team Science Research and Practice

This panel will discuss the Ocean Memory Project (OMP), a collaboration born out of a National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAKFI) Conference.  The Ocean Memory Project (OMP) is a collaborative network of researchers from across the Sciences, Arts and Humanities dedicated to exploring the intersection of Ocean and Memory and advancing Ocean Memory as a new field of scholarship and creative expression. As a deeply transdisciplinary team, for this Lunch N Learn, they will discuss the story of the ocean memory project and the successes and challenges of leading such a radically trans-disciplinary effort. Included in this will be discussion of artists in residence involved in the study of a network of seafloor hydrothermal vents, the use of performance art to convey and communicate new ideas in science, the use of embodied artistic research methods as a way of remembering and recovering the memory of rhythms and cycles that we are losing due to climate change, and the challenges associated with virtual cross-disciplinary interactions.  Audience participation will be encouraged to discuss unique team science challenges in such projects, as well as query how art and science can contribute to expanding our understanding of the world around us.

INSciTS Summer Panel Three

Learning Science via Scientific Teamwork 

Wednesday July 13, 2022

9:00am (PDT), 12:00noon (EDT), 6:00pm (CET)

This panel will discuss how scientists learn from each other while working together.  We discuss the concept of reciprocal learning in the context of interdisciplinary science and the communication and collaboration processes supporting it.  We submit that reciprocal learning is a process driving interdisciplinary team science effectiveness. In this session we discuss implications for science team learning and how to improve ‘on the job’ learning for interdisciplinary teams.  Audience participation will be encouraged to discuss how it is they learn from each other during collaborations, the nature of the communications they find most effective, and any best practices they can share to foster learning about science during scientific teamwork.

 INSciTS Summer Panel Four

The Team Science Toolkit: Past, Present, and Future

What do we need from a future Team Science Toolkit? In our final Lunch 'n' Learn, we'll have an interactive session, where we review the history of NCI’s Team Science Toolkit and toolkits in general, and then crowdsource ideas on possible form, content, and function from the audience. An exploratory committee has been asked to provide recommendations for a future version of the Team Science Toolkit to the INSciTS board in Fall 2022. Through breakout groups and other formats, participants will seed the Committee’s work and prepare for the next round of input during the SciTS 2022 conference.
